Japan: Shikoku & Kyushu
Two Pacific-facing coasts a long way from Tokyo, grouped together because they share the same swell pattern: Shikoku's Kaiyo coast (Ikumi, Kaifu Rivermouth) in Tokushima and Miyazaki's Hyuga coast (Isegahama, Okuragahama) in Kyushu both pick up the August–October typhoon window and a consistent winter NE groundswell, with less crowd pressure than Chiba/Shonan.

Why Shikoku & Kyushu
These are Japan's two classic surf-travel coasts outside Tokyo's reach, grouped here because the swell windows line up: Ikumi in Tokushima is widely regarded as Shikoku's best, most consistent beach break, and Miyazaki's Hyuga coast (Isegahama and the long Okuragahama beach south of it) is Kyushu's equivalent — both get typhoon swell in autumn and a reliable winter NE groundswell that Chiba/Shonan doesn't see as cleanly.
When to go
- Aug–Oct: typhoon season, the biggest and most powerful swell on both coasts.
- Nov–Feb: winter NE groundswell, generally the most consistent window for clean, well-organised surf; cooler water, a wetsuit needed.
- Mar–Jul: quieter, smaller surf; still worth a stop if travelling through.
Who it suits
Intermediate surfers looking for better-quality, less crowded Japanese beach breaks than Tokyo's day-trip coast, and advanced surfers chasing the autumn typhoon swell. Kaifu Rivermouth's sandbank peak rewards a bit of local knowledge about the bank; Ikumi, Isegahama and Okuragahama are more straightforward beach breaks.
