The Gironde's resort beach break, 150 km north of the Landes names people know and the reason Lacanau has a surf-school economy of its own. Open-coast sandbanks that usually have something, with the autumn window — its guide says most often October — the reason to plan a trip rather than take one.

Beginner notes

Graded 2 rather than 1, and the distinction is the paddle. It is an ordinary open-coast Atlantic beach break: teachable on a small day, unteachable on a big one, with the schools moving along the beach to suit — but its own guide warns of rips, and getting out on an average day is real work in a way it is not at a sheltered learner beach. A first-timer will be fine in a lesson on the right day and out of their depth without one. The September–October swell that makes the trip worth taking is also what closes it out for them.
