Somo
A long sand beach across the bay from Santander, running into Loredo at its far end, and Spain’s first designated surf reserve. Gentle enough at the western end to be the north coast’s main teaching beach, with cleaner autumn shape towards the east and at Loredo. It is the obvious base for anyone who wants Cantabria rather than the busier Basque coast.

September to November is the best window for a first or second trip: proper groundswell with cleaner shape, and 17-19°C water. Stay clear of the channel at the western end, where the tide runs hard into Santander Bay.
Hazards
- rip beside the river channel into Santander Bay
- shifting banks
- busy in August
