Why Eastern Australia
The run from the Gold Coast down through Byron Bay to the New South Wales south coast is what most people mean by Australian surfing. Snapper Rocks at the northern end is a point break with famously long rides; The Pass at Byron is a long, forgiving right that beginners and longboarders share with everybody else.
What makes it a good first surf trip is not the marquee waves. It is that the coast is dense with workable beach breaks, the water is warm enough for a spring suit most of the year, and the camps here are built for people who have not stood up yet.
When to go
- Apr–Sep is the prime window, and it is what the months above reflect. Winter (May–Aug) is the most consistent: Tasman Sea lows send solid east and south swell into the coast with south-westerly offshores.
- Dec–Apr is cyclone season. Tropical systems push long-period E/SE swell into the points, and Byron is at its most powerful in summer and early autumn — but week to week it is far less dependable.
- May–Jun is the overlap worth aiming for: the last cyclone swells alongside the first winter groundswells.
Skill
The Pass and the Gold Coast beach breaks are genuinely learnable. Snapper Rocks is not, and the reason is the crowd rather than the wave — it is one of the most contested lineups in the world. Treat it as somewhere to watch, not somewhere to learn.
Getting around
Gold Coast (OOL) and Ballina (BNK) serve the northern end; Sydney (SYD) serves the south coast, with Gerroa about two hours' drive. The camps here run their own transfers, and outside them a car is close to essential — the good beaches are spread out.
