Grumari
Grumari sits just around the headland from Prainha inside the same protected coastal reserve, and it is the quiet one — an exposed sand-bottom beach break with fast lefts and rights that very rarely gets crowded. It takes a mix of groundswell and windswell, works best on a S to SSW swell with N to NW offshore, and surfs at all stages of the tide. Autumn and winter are the peak, around June, but it breaks year-round and holds size on a solid SSW.

More approachable than neighbouring Prainha and genuinely fun when it is small, but it is not a taught beach: there are no schools on the sand, no lifeguard cover to rely on, and access is by car only, an hour west of Ipanema. The waves are described as fast, so improvers will get more out of it than first-timers. Go with someone who knows the banks, and don't stay after dark.
Hazards
- fast waves
- rip currents
- remote — no facilities and car access only
- protected beach with restricted access
