Prainha
The wave Rio's serious surfers drive west for — a small cove at the far end of the west zone, backed by protected Atlantic forest, that picks up more swell than anywhere else around the city. Three sections work on a good S to SW groundswell: a powerful barrelling left, a long right off the headland, and a fun middle peak. NW is the offshore wind and it surfs on all stages of the tide. Autumn through winter is the season, peaking around May; summer is mostly flat. Sources call it very consistent, working around 150 days a year.

Find my Level →Beginner notes
Not a beginner wave. The paddle-out crosses outer banks that reform, the take-offs are steep, and the line-up is both localised and competitive — WannaSurf logs it as empty midweek and ultra-crowded at weekends. Beginners in Rio belong on Barra da Tijuca, Macumba or Recreio, where the schools teach and the sand is forgiving. Come to Prainha once you are confidently making steep drops in overhead surf, and come on a weekday.
Hazards
- localism
- rip currents
- marker buoys
