Praia de Itacoatiara
Itacoatiara sits in Niterói's Região Oceânica, across Guanabara Bay from Rio and about an hour from Ipanema by road. It is a 1.5 km beach hemmed by granite, and it breaks far harder than anything on the Rio city side: an exposed beach break with reef and point sections, three named peaks — Costão on the left, Meio in the middle, Pampo on the right — and a reputation as one of the heaviest beach breaks anywhere. Best on a SW swell with a N offshore. Winter is the season and June the peak; summer is mostly flat. Off the rocks sits the Laje do Shock, a slab surfed tow-in during the Itacoatiara Big Wave event on faces reported to 6 m — that is a separate proposition from the beach and should be read as one.

Not a beginner beach, and not an improver one either. The wave is short, hollow and breaks close to shore with little room between the lip and the sand, the currents are strong, and there is exposed rock at the northern end. One aggregator grades it for intermediates; Brazilian surf coverage of the same beach describes rock above the sea floor and a tow-in big-wave event — where those disagree we take the harder reading. Learn in Rio at Macumba or Barra da Tijuca and come here when you can already handle fast, powerful beach break on a solid day.
