Playa Venao
A long south-facing crescent of black sand on the Azuero peninsula that works as a swell magnet — the shape of the cove means almost anything with south in it reaches the sand, and it is surfable on a large majority of days through the year. It breaks over shifting sandbars with several peaks: the eastern corner is the gentlest, the centre holds the best-formed waves, and the western end is quieter. The dry season from December to April is smaller and cleaner; the main swell season from May to October is bigger and more powerful. Sources disagree on tide, and mid tide is the most commonly cited.

Find my Level →Beginner notes
One of the better places in Central America to learn, with the honest caveat that it is not uniformly easy. Beginners belong on the sheltered corners, where the swell arrives gradually over soft sand with no reef or rock anywhere. The centre peaks are an intermediate wave in normal conditions and go genuinely advanced on a solid south swell, which is when visiting beginners get caught out. Rip currents are the named hazard here and are documented as strong, so learn with a school rather than paddling out alone on a big day.
Hazards
- strong rip currents
- shifting sandbars
- faster, heavier peaks in the centre on a big swell
