La Punta
Panama's best-known wave and the reason Santa Catalina exists as a surf town — a long right-hand point peeling over a volcanic rock-and-reef shelf on the headland southwest of the village, with reliable morning offshores coming off the land. Rides of 50 to 150 metres are normal and some guides describe 200 metres on the right swell. It runs on Southern-Hemisphere groundswell, best around SSW with a long period, and the bay has a very large tidal range, so how much reef is underneath you changes through the day. Sources disagree on tide: most say mid-to-high and incoming, one argues for low — we publish mid-to-high.

Find my Level →Beginner notes
Not the beginner wave of Santa Catalina, whatever the softer guides suggest — Playa Estero next door is where lessons happen. Sources split widely here, from 'forgiving enough for careful improvers' to 'advanced to expert over razor-sharp volcanic reef', and we take the harder reading. You get out by rock-hopping or paddling one of two narrow channels between reefs, the end section is shallow, and urchins are documented — booties are recommended by every source that mentions footwear. A confident intermediate can surf it small, clean and mid-tide; above head-high it is not a progression wave.
Hazards
- shallow volcanic reef
- sea urchins
- large tidal range
- long rock-hop entry
- rocks
