Praia do Tombo
Guarujá's quality wave and the closest serious beach break to the city of São Paulo. The seabed drops away abruptly — the 'tombo' the beach is named for — so waves break with real power over about 800 metres of defined peaks, with quick, workable sections rather than long walls. Best on a S to SE groundswell with NNW offshore, and it surfs at all stages of the tide. April to September is the swell window, cleanest around May. It hosts state and national championship stages, which is a fair summary of the standard in the water.

Not a learner's beach — the local guide puts the minimum at intermediate, and the abrupt drop-off that makes the wave good is also what makes it punchy. It is the most-surfed beach in Guarujá, so expect a busy, competitive line-up at peak hours and at weekends; before 07:00 is both cleaner and quieter. Currents get strong once it is over head-high. Beginners in Guarujá should be at Enseada, ten minutes away, where the schools teach.
