Western Australia
Western Australia’s surf coast end to end: the Margaret River region’s dense, mostly advanced reef cluster in the south, plus the remote, self-reliant breaks of Kalbarri and the Ningaloo Coast up north — two very different seasons and skill bars under one state.

Why Western Australia
WA's surf coast is really two different trips a thousand-plus kilometres apart. The Margaret River region, three hours south of Perth, is the dense, advanced reef cluster the state is known for internationally. Kalbarri and the Ningaloo Coast (Exmouth), far to the north, are remote, uncrowded and self-reliant — no learn-to-surf infrastructure, dirt-track access, and in Exmouth's case reef passes that are genuinely dangerous if you don't already know what you're doing.
### Margaret River region
Faces the Southern Ocean and takes SW–W groundswell nearly year-round, across more than seventy-five breaks in about 130 km of coast. Main Break, off the point at Prevelly, is an A-frame reef with peeling lefts and rights, faces from 5 to 20 feet, and the site of the Margaret River Pro — an advanced wave and should be read as one. Every camp/school listing here is lessons-only: lodging and surf instruction are separate businesses in Margaret River.
- Mar–May and Sep–Nov (autumn/spring) are the best all-round windows: solid SW–W groundswell with grooming easterly offshores, without deep-winter storminess.
- Jun–Aug brings the year's biggest, most consistent swell, and also the wettest, least forgiving conditions.
- Dec–Feb is mildest and most likely small; Yallingup in particular tends flat through summer.
### Kalbarri
A small town on the Murchison River mouth, ~570 km north of Perth. Jakes Point, a world-class but experienced-only left point breaking over a shallow reef ledge, is the name wave; Chinaman nearby is a rare, sloppy, beginner-friendly sandbar that only works a handful of days a year. There is currently no verified, bookable surf school in Kalbarri — ask locally.
### Exmouth / Ningaloo Coast
~1,270 km north of Perth, on the Ningaloo Coast inside the North West Cape. The surf cluster sits along Yardie Creek Road south of Vlamingh Head Lighthouse: Dunes (Surfers Beach) is the marquee reef break (hollow left, friendlier right) for experienced surfers, The Bombie off Lighthouse Bay is advanced-only, and Wobiri is the forgiving, sandy beginner option. These are remote, unpatrolled beaches reached on dirt tracks — bring water, booties and don't surf alone. Exmouth Surf Centre hires boards and wetsuits in town, but its surf lessons are currently paused (per the operator's own site), so it is not listed here as a school.
- Both Kalbarri and Exmouth see their best, most consistent swell roughly March–October (winter-dominant Southern Ocean groundswell), per surf-forecast.com and wannasurf.com break data and local operator/visitor-centre guides.
Skill
Margaret River's Main Break, Kalbarri's Jakes Point and Exmouth's Dunes/The Bombie are all advanced-only. Beginners in the south go to the Margaret River/Redgate/Yallingup schools; beginners up north have only Wobiri (Exmouth) and Chinaman (Kalbarri, rare) as workable options, and no instructor on hand at either.
Getting around
Fly into Perth (PER) for Margaret River (3hr drive) and Kalbarri (~6-7hr drive, or fly to Geraldton then drive ~2hr). For Exmouth/Ningaloo, fly into Learmonth (LEA), ~35 minutes' drive from Exmouth; Busselton (BQB) is the closer airport for Margaret River.
