Bocas del Toro
Panama's Caribbean archipelago, and the country's winter surf. Reef breaks and heavy sand barrels across three islands, peaking from December to March — the months the Pacific side is flat.

Why Bocas del Toro
Bocas is a separate surf destination from the rest of Panama, not a side trip from it. It sits on the Caribbean, roughly 400 km from Santa Catalina, and it runs on the opposite calendar: North Atlantic swell and trade-wind fetch light it up from December to March, when the Pacific south-swell season is over.
The archipelago is compact and the breaks are reached by water taxi in minutes, which is its real advantage — you can surf a different island every day without a car.
The islands
- Isla Colón holds the breaks closest to town: Paunch, a live-coral reef a-frame, and Bluff Beach, a heavy shorebreak that is advanced-only despite being a beach.
- Isla Carenero is three minutes by boat and holds the long left point and the region's gentlest reef, which is where most lessons happen.
- Isla Bastimentos is the outer island — remote beaches, and Silverbacks, a big-wave slab that only wakes a handful of days a year.
When to go
- Dec–Mar: the season. December and January are the most consistent.
- Jun–Aug: a smaller secondary window, July best of the three.
- May, Sep–Nov: largely flat. Come for the islands, not the surf.
Water sits around 30°C year-round: boardshorts and a rash vest, but reef boots are worth packing — most breaks here are live coral and three separate sources recommend them.
A word on the reef
This is a reef destination that happens to have beaches, not the other way round. Two of the friendliest-sounding names are the dangerous ones: Bluff Beach barrels onto shallow sand a few metres from dry land and breaks boards routinely, and Red Frog Beach is a fast close-out with reef patches scattered through the sand. The genuinely forgiving waves are on Carenero, where the reef sits deep.
Getting around
Fly from Panama City to Bocas Town (BOC) in about an hour, or take the bus to Almirante and the water taxi across. Once you're there everything is boats — five minutes to Carenero, ten to twenty to the Bastimentos breaks.
